What is a Gourmet Coffee Pod?

Not all coffee beans or coffee pods contain gourmet coffee.

There are two types of coffee beans, Arabica and Robusta. All gourmet coffees are pure Arabica or blends of Arabica beans. Premium Arabica coffee beans cost many times more than the ordinary Arabica beans. Robusta coffee beans are often sold by the ton.

There are rumors about how much is paid for the finest Premium Arabica coffee beans. We common folk will never know.

The first thing you should know about coffee pods is that many of them contain the exact same coffee that you’ve been buying in a can for years.

Some coffee pod packagers use wholesale Robusta roasted coffee beans and some use canned ground coffee. These coffees are processed into pods and then packaged into bags of loose pods. Unfortunately, regardless of the quality of the beans, bags full of loose coffee pods get stale and lose their fresh ground taste a few hours after air enters the bag.

Other coffee pods are processed into pods and then packaged as individually packaged coffee pods. Many of these processes are performed in ambient air (21% oxygen) environment and whenever ground coffee is exposed to oxygen, it begins to deteriorate immediately.

As you can see, many of the coffee pods in this category had lost the fresh roasted flavor long before they were packaged into a coffee pod.

Some even have fresh ground artificial flavoring sprayed on them during the packaging process. Let the buyer beware.

Gourmet coffee pods require three things: quality coffee beans, the proper podding process, and an oxygen-free environment to maintain freshness.

Gourmet coffee pods are introducing millions of coffee drinkers to the taste of excellent Arabica coffee for the first time in their lives. Excellent coffee is no longer the exclusive right of the privileged few.
